Election: Passengers stranded at Lagos Airport

Ikeja  -No fewer than 50 passengers who arrived in Lagos early, Tuesday, were stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, following the restriction on vehicular movement.

However, the number was lower compared to the about 300 passengers who were stranded during the presidential election on April 16, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Some airline officials, who elected to remain anonymous, said that most intending passengers did not buy tickets because of the restriction on movement.

The affected airlines are Qatar, Ethiopian, Emirate and Air Nigeria.

“We recorded low passenger turnout on our inbound flight from Accra,’’ said an airline official.

Some of the stranded passengers told NAN that they were not aware of the restriction on movement, adding that they would not have embarked on the trip to Nigeria.

An inbound passenger from New York, Mr James Agwai, said he arrived aboard a Virgin Atlantic flight from London at 5.30 a.m.

“I had already bought my ticket from New York and was on transit to London when I got the information of the restriction,’’ Agwai told NAN.

NAN reports that only very few customers were at an eatery located at the airport, as against the large number that usually patronise the place.

The situation was different at the domestic wing of the airport where there were no activities.
