Abuja – Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers has inaugurated the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency(NESREA) office in Port Harcourt.
The office, named “ NESREA House, ’’ was built by the Rivers Government to support the agency in ensuring environmental sustainability in the country.
A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by Sule Oyofo, Chief Press Secretary to NESREA, said the building with 32 rooms would house the South-South Zonal Office of NESREA and the Rivers Office of the agency.
It would also accommodate the World Health Organisation (WHO) approved reference laboratory.
Amaechi, according to the statement, said the decision to build the structure was in line with his administration’s preparedness to ensure a healthy environment for residents of the state.
“It is important to create standards and keep to them, we need enlightenment, standards need to be set and it is important for everybody to abide by these standards,’’ he said.
The statement also said the Minister of Environment, Mr John Odey, had earlier described the efforts of the Rivers Government as symbol of good environmental governance.
The minister said the project was evidence of the good deeds of the Rivers government and urged other state governments to emulate it.
The Director-General of NESREA, Dr Ngeri Benebo, expressed gratitude to the state government for executing the project.
“We pledge that the building will be used to the glory of God and we will work with other agencies to make sure that the entire country is kept clean,’’ Benebo said. (NAN)
