By Umar Yusuf
YOLA—An attempted jail break was yesterday averted at the Jimeta Prison in Yola, Adamawa State capital.
The officer-in-charge of the prison, Mohammed Gwami, was attacked and slightly injured by the inmates. The timely intervention of anti-riot mobile police saved the situation.

Gwami told newsmen at the premises of the Jimeta Prison that he was in the yard for his routine roll call when suddenly the inmates started protesting and insisted that they will not return into their cells.

He stated that it was at this juncture that the inmates started attacking him and other warders  with stones and pebbles.

“I immediately alerted the Comptroller of Prisons and the nearby Jimeta Divisional Police Station and we were able to overcome the enraged inmates,” the prison official said.

He added that moments after the arrival of the Comptroller of Prisons, the anti-riot mobile police-men were drafted to the prison to ensure that the situation was put under control.

Also speaking to correspondents at the prison, the Comptroller of Prisons in Adamawa State, Alhaji Mohammed Nata Allah, said he received a distress call from the Officer-in-Charge that there was problem with the inmates.

The Comptroller added that on arrival at the prison, he, along with other warders, succeeded in arresting the situation.
