The Lagos State Government is discussing with some private investors on the possibility of concessioning more roads to facilitate infrastructural development.
Mr Ganiyu Johnson, Special Adviser to Gov. Babatunde Fashola on Works and Infrastructure, said that the investors were expected to recoup their money through tolls on the roads.
Johnson spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikeja on yesterday.
He said that the arrangement was the best for accelerated infrastructural development of the state.
The government recently awarded a contract for the expansion and reconstruction of the 49km Lekki –Epe Expressway to the Lekki Concession Company (LCC).
The company is to collect tolls on the road for 25 years, a decision that has not gone down well with some residents, especially those who live and do business on the Lekki corridor.
Johnson said that some of the roads that would be given out to concessionaires included the Berger–Isawo Road.
He said that if reconstructed, the road would absorb some traffic from the Ojodu–Berger Road as well as serve as an access road to Ikorodu Road.
“Also passengers and motorists would have an alternative to the ever busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, especially during festivities. Passengers and commuters would through the Berger-Isawo Road access the Lagos–Sagamu-Ijebu–Ode-Benin Road and from there link the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and continue their journeys instead of being trapped for several hours on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway,’’he said.
Johnson said that the government would also want to concession the Ajegunle-Agboyi- Ogudu Road.
“We also have in mind the Mende-Opebi Road which when completed would help to decongest Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way. Also we have a proposal for the concessioning of a road from Mende to Ogudu to link the Third Mainland Bridge.
