It emerged yesterday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may investigate the controversial appointment of  Lars Lagerback as coach of the Eagles.

Presidential spokesman, Ima Niboro, hinted that there will be an inquiry on how the coach was hired. And also the books will be opened on all funding concerning the World Cup.

Coach Lagerback was hired in March 2010 amidst controversy. He was selected from a short list of five coaches including Sven Goran Eriksson and former England coach Glenn Hoddle.

After the interviews conducted in Abuja, Mr. Hoddle alleged that certain Nigeria Football Association  and Sports Ministry officials had asked him to hike his pay from $900, 000  to $1.5m, before he could be given the job.

NFA officials vehemently denied any wrong doing in the selection process. They insisted that it was Lagerback’s power point presentation that swayed the job in his favour.

Lagerback’s pay for five months of was $1.5 million. But the Swede failed to deliver at the World Cup as the Eagles failed to win a single match in their group B pairings.
