THE Lagos State Ministry of Health has begun a campaign against smoking aimed at discouraging adolescents and young adults from taking up the act while encouraging smokers to quit.
To this end, public areas and facilities are to be designated no smoking areas. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris who disclosed this, noted that the State-wide campaign would also focus on disseminating effects of tobacco on pregnancy and the health of mothers and the general populace amongst others.
He expressed worry that women are being extensively targeted in tobacco marketing and tobacco adverts, stating that tobacco companies have produced brands specifically for women.
Stating that women comprise 20 percent of the World’s one billion smokers he said: “Several examples of tobacco adverts and promotions targeted to women indicate that such marketing is dominated by themes of both social desirability and independence, which are conveyed through the adverts featuring slim, attractive and athletic models.
“While discouraging men and women from smoking, we are also challenging smokers to quit today. You can quit smoking by setting a quit date, throwing away your ashtrays and lighters; making a list of reasons why you want to quit; etc.â€
