ONITSHA — The people of Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State, weekend, resolved to sanction politicians who cause disaffection between them, the executive and legislative arms of government.
This followed a protest march to the Anambra State House of Assembly by some politicians from Ayamelum, led by one Mr Tony Ifeanya, allegedly sponsored by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Paul Odenigbo, accusing the representative of Ayamelum state constituency in the House, Mr. Gabriel Onyenwife, of spearheading the impeachment move against the Speaker, Chef Anayo Nebe.
Ayamelum people, rising from an emergency meeting, condemned the protest by those they described as failed politicians, whose stock in trade is to foment trouble and portray the local government area as enemy of any government in power.
Passing a vote of confidence on the lawmaker, they described as false, insinuation that Onyenwife was the arrow head of the impeachment plot against Nebe.
Onyenwife, an ally
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the Ayamelum people said, that “the Chief Whip, Mr. Onyenwife, had consistently and openly fought the political enemies of the Speaker and remained his greatest ally both in the hallowed chambers of the House of Assembly and in the public, attracting rumours that the Chief Whip and the Speaker had a covenant binding them together. The Chief Whip can, therefore, never work against the Speaker.â€
The statement further said, “the entire Ayamelum clan and the local government are solidly behind Mr. Onyenwife, member representing Ayamelum constituency in the House of Assembly. Accordingly, we hereby re-affirm our implicit confidence and support in him.â€
The people dissociated themselves from what they described as show of shame by some hirelings and political renegades at the premises of the State House of Assembly and the Government House on 29 April.
According to them, the lawmaker had impacted positively on their lives in the areas of education, health, agriculture, electricity and road.
Pledge support for Gov Obi
They declared that any further attempt to disparage the local government by failed politicians from the area would be met with appropriate punishment, pledging their unalloyed support and loyalty to Governor Peter Obi’s government.
“The entire Ayamelum people commend Governor Obi for his developmental strides and urge him to disregard the antics of the few sons of Ayamelum in the corridors of power, who have done nothing positive in the local government but only indulge in acts that tarnish his image and that of his government,†the people added.
