OWERRI—Imo State Government says it is now mandatory for all prospective royal fathers to undergo rigorous security screening before appointment.
Governor Ikedi Ohakim, who read the riot act in Owerri, while inaugurating the newly reconstituted Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, also warned that those with questionable path may end up in jail, while trying to become an Eze.
“The era of criminals covering up their ugly past with royal robes is gone for good. Traditional rulers must earn their dignity and respect by their personal conducts. They must maintain strict personal and family discipline,†Ohakim said.
The Governor also raised an alarm that “bad people and their killer squads are on the prowl again, killing and maiming in order to disturb the peace we enjoy in the state.â€
He said that a group that specializes in smear campaign was furiously at work again, using the internet and text messages as instruments of destruction.
“We must all be vigilant, especially now that we are approaching intense political activities. Many empty barrels will attempt to use the abuse of the Governor as a stepping stone to an undeserved relevance,†Ohakim said.
He charged the royal fathers to partner with government in the urgent task of recovering and redeeming the youths, stressing that a lot of resources had been invested in Nigerian youths.
