NNEWI—TWENTY seven staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi, have been honoured with Merit Award for distinguishing themselves in the area of their primary assignments in the hospital. The management of the hospital organised the ceremony through the newly created Corporate Affairs Department in the institution.

‘’We carried out some detailed investigations on your philanthropic activities and were satisfied with what we got, hence, the board of Symbol of Hope Foundation chose to present these awards to encourage you to do more for the society,” Chibueze said. Receiving the awards, Anyaso said he had dedicated them to the students of his school, Ahuoma Educational Foundation and the less privileged in the society.

DURING French philosopher and writer, Ernest Renan’s famous 1887 lecture at the Sorbonne, my Alma matter, he asked the question “what is a nation”? He answered, “a soul”, a “spiritual principle”. What is the “essence” of Nigeria? What are our common beliefs, principles? Unfortunately, the answer to that veers towards the negative.

EVEN if nothing else comes out of the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party in the presidential election of 2015, Nigerians should count themselves lucky once the defeat can lead to the consolidation of our politics by way of giving room for the formation of viable political parties. But this is if our politicians would allow it. From the look of things, however, Nigerian politicians are not prepared to see our so-called nascent democracy grow into something more enduring.
