THREE important comments have recently been made on the linkages between poverty, politics and insecurity, and the current state of the North. First, the Governor of Borno State said that poverty and poor governance in the last few years are responsible for fuelling the Boko Haram insurgency in his region.

SOMEHOW death brings out the hidden side of the Nigerian. I mean, really, that death, especially that which offers photo opportunity, exposes the hypocritical side of the Nigerian.

Perhaps that was why in an essay by someone calling himself “a Noble Writer” derisively announced that “Law is injustice codified”. He might have a point. However, granted that it has become almost universally accepted conventional wisdom that “the law is an ass”, reasonable people, who hold the view that the law should be an instrument to serve justice, expect magistrates and judges to ride the ass and not crawl, on all fours, with it.

During the recent fuel subsidy controversy, the government side rightly challenged Labour to name any item other than fuel whose price had remained unchanged since 2007. It was probably a strong point but the truth is that both the government and her people have the same attitude towards petroleum which in this piece we simply call ‘petroleum mentality’- a mindset which devalues an otherwise precious item.
