NIGERIA is on the highway. This Friday, May 29, 2015, as we approach a major T- Junction, we shall stop to change drivers. Brother Goodluck Jonathan, who has driven us since February 10, 2010, will handover the steering to Comrade Muhammadu Buhari. As Buhari takes us to the T-Junction, we would either turn right, and start doing things right, or left, and continue on the familiar road of dependency, consumerism, ruinous market forces, prodigal privatisation, fuel importation rather than refining, and neo-liberal policies that take, rather than create jobs. Then, it will be business as usual.

IN exactly four days, the days of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be over. You must, like me, have wondered what this young man will be doing with his life at 58.

In retrospect, the Naira was readily accepted in major cities like London and New York, ironically, at a time when our total foreign reserves hardly approached $10bn dollars! Indeed, as CBN consistently places Naira at a disadvantage in the market place against the dollar, the economy has also become dollarised by monetary strategies that weaken the Naira.

In a few days from now, Nigerians will usher in a new set of leaders to administer the government for the next four years. May 29, 2015 – Nigeria’s Democracy Day is a day many Nigerians and the world at large are looking forward to. On this day, the baton of leadership will change hands, not only from individuals, but also from political parties.
