Most of us never bother to determine precisely why we believe what we believe or do what we do. Why, for instance, do we celebrate Christmas? As far as Christians are concerned, we do so because we delight in Christ and rejoice in him. Christmas is a Christian tradition celebrated for centuries the world over. Surely, billions of people cannot be wrong.

Some people who were and are perhaps still unhappy on behalf Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State and his predecessor, Godswill Akpabio have made several rejoinders in the last few days in response to last week’s article in this column titled “Uncommon Governance: The bane of Akwa Ibom State.”

Dear readers, I believe you have resolved to be lifted up spiritually this year. If anyone tells you that having a breakthrough is easy, then he or she isn’t telling the truth.

You may be young and infantile” was the title of an article in the PUNCH, on Monday, January 4, 2016, by Solaade Ayo-Aderele on page 16. Thanks to Ayo-Aderele, it suddenly occurred to me that you might also be old and infantile. Many politicians in Nigeria today, almost all over forty, are behaving, talking and acting like kids. Incredible as it might appear to thinking people, some adults are actually talking seriously about reviving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP – which is already at the graveyard waiting to be buried. Wait for the explanation.

I have come across many references to the past. Some state that the past is very important because it is a guide to the future; some believe that the past must address its present (apologies to Soyinka in his Nobel Lecture) and some, like I want to be part of now, believe that the past is gone and should be allowed to rest in peace; however only to be remembered for its good contributions. I have decided to join this group of philosophers because of what is happening in the country now and what will happen in the near future.
