Fibre optic cable protection — beyond words, by Okoh Aihe

Getting a fibre optic ring around the country has enjoyed robust discourse in recent times. The other day, it was the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) calling a gathering to discuss a proposed Dig-Once policy which would ensure that the telcos and infrastructure companies rolling out fibre optic cables would have to take their fibres through one channel […]

God Is Talking To You (6)

I was a baby Christian, basking in newborn fellowship of the Holy Spirit.  I woke up one morning only to discover I was singing a new song.  I had never sung this song before, but it was clear I had been singing it while asleep and continued singing it now awake.  How do you sing a song you never knew before?  How do you come to know the words?  That is kingdom dynamics.

Nigerian history and the morbid obsession with national unity (6)

Furthermore, why would stoppage of the country’s drift towards “utter destruction” be something that would cause great disappointment and heartbreak to sincere lovers of the country? The truth is clear in this sordid episode, notwithstanding the afterthought Gowon inserted at the end of his speech. Lt. Col. Gowon and his co-conspirators from the North backed away from their original secession plan because it would be economically disastrous for the North without revenues derived from Southern Nigeria.

From Barbados with love for Nigerians

Tuesday October 29, 2013 will mark exactly one year since Mrs Nenyin Alison Attah, the former First Lady of Akwa Ibom State departed this world for eternal life. For the two children, Felicia and Christopher, and for His Excellency, Obong Victor Attah, the Father of Akwa Ibom State, it has been a long year; made longer by the absence of the centre-piece of every home – a loving wife and mother. Life had ceased to be the same for them; but life must go on.
But it was not only the husband and kids who will miss her. Eno, the house help of over three decades, who through the generousity of the former First Lady, had sent two kids to university and is the proud owner of three bedroom bungalow, with boys quarters attached, had refused to go. Like the Biblical Ruth she had decided that even in death “Your people shall be my people”. She represents a lot of people who are still to come to terms that their long term benefactor had gone – never to return.

Sealed with a loving kiss

By Debbie Olujobi A kiss is a loving seal on affection, a bodily statement that speaks love when words become redundant; a physical expression of love. A kiss is intimate; it connotes familiarity, affection, an emotional currency of a love shared. I don’t refer to the casual cheek to cheek kiss that’s a meaningless greeting […]

Religion, politics and sectarian double dealing

They say that an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. In Nigeria, it seems that the blind is leading the blind and they do so willingly and that is more the pity.

They seem to go towards the precipice without questioning the true intentions of the leader. The piped piper plays on and like the mice of Hamlin they follow doggedly leaping from one disaster to the next without a flicker of reflection or conscience.

Not giving a damn!

It is very clear that President Goodluck Jonathan is determined and almost desperate to seek another term of office. His refusal to put it in so many words can be described as his stock in trade. He did precisely that, the last time around, before ferociously pursuing his ambition. Not many people were fooled then. Hardly anyone is fooled now.

… and the monkey won

Some things no just make sense… not after all this time and not after everything mankind has been through. Like we don’t have enough problems as it is … natural disasters of global proportions, monumental global fraud, all kinds of sickness and disease, the constant threat of nuclear warfare to mention just a few. On top of all of this and some, having to deal with the petty mindedness of man just seems too much to bear.

The age of deception

In line with the fantasies I still harbour that the next generation of Usain Bolts will be unearthed from this country, I recently got involved with a group of upcoming local athletic talent which trains every weekend. Last Saturday I impulsively decided to conduct a series of impromptu interviews amongst the youths —primarily to record their hopes and aspirations for posterity, but also to imbue in them a sense of importance and purpose.

Time to let go,Chief Oyebola

By Mayowa Adetiba A couple of weeks ago, Chief Areoye Oyebola, a former Editor of Daily Times, gave yet again, his account of the event that led to what some veteran journalists described as the day of the long knives in Daily Times. The knives that came out that day made many people to become […]

Here they come again: Cynics and sceptics

If there is one thing on which many Nigerians and the friends of Nigeria agree upon without any reservation, it is that the country‘s economic and political achievements since 1960 are below expectation. The naturally endowed nation which should be the undisputed ‘giant of Africa‘ is however, unfortunately, has become a pitiable crawler in the race for development.
