Recently I have become literally obsessed with the term capacity. I have also tried to look at the term from some perspectives, but as I discuss it now, my intention is not to commercialize it, rather I will domesticate (privatize) it. By domesticating it, I shall be treating it in my “capacity” as a Nigerian, who lives and works in Lagos. I wish I could say, with deep and sincere conviction that I am a Nigerian and a Lagosian.

I would like to see Dance institutions in every state and performing art centers. I want dance to be a profession on its own and to see more trained dancers, teachers and choreographers. I want people who are gifted to be able to channel it in the right direction and for Nigerian Dance styles to be exported and known worldwide. I want to see people appreciated for their contribution and hard work, for the kids to take dance as part of their subjects.

No fewer than 15,000 residents living in Surulere village, Suberu-Oje in Alagbado, Lagos state now live in fear as some unknown miscreants regularly invade their community, making life uncomfortable for them. One of the residents who spoke to Saturday Vanguard lamented that more than 200 thugs in 15 vanagon buses recently invaded the community, armed with dangerous weapons, damaging property and rendering thousands of families homeless.

The wild joy over the double triumph of General Muhammadu’s election victory and President Goodluck Jonathan’s superlative gesture of statesmanship portends violent-free polls across the board. However, there appears to be a hiccup that may not be entirely ignored. It had been feared that Lagos, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States were among the areas where violence could flare up during these elections, and the general calm that saw the end of the presidential election had not entirely dismissed those fears.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Chief Olisa Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, complained about the APC’s alleged misconduct in Ekiti State and accused General Buhari and his party of “moving around the country instigating division, engineering crisis and heightening tension” (“instead of settling down to plan a smooth transition and design ways of deepening democracy in appreciation of the mandate given to him”).

When, at first, I heard that the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, had threatened to drown any Igbo person who does not vote for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, I did not believe it.

Evidently, we have just gone through the most keenly contested presidential election in the troubled history of this nation. At no time has the ruling class been so desperate to carve up the citizenry along the primordial lines of ethnicity and religion.

This weekend, Nigerians return to the polls to choose governors for most of our states, as well as legislators for state Houses of Assembly. The governor is a very important position because governors affect the lives of millions of Nigerians in our states. Where governors are genuinely committed to the best interest of their people, positive transformative developments can be achieved in states.

AMIDST the many thoughts and emotions that crowded my mind when it became apparent that Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was well on his way to defeating President Goodluck Jonathan, the word “character” kept asserting itself. Puzzling this little conundrum, I soon discovered why. Character had been the organising concept for my endorsement and advocacy for Buhari.
