A sense of belonging is what most people spend their whole lives looking to find; its why we are attached to friends and relatives; its why we spend a major part of our lives looking for that special someone to share our lives with; its why we build our homes to particular tastes and fill it with all sorts of knick knacks that make it a home.. As much as we all aspire to greatness; to excel in all enterprises we set our minds to no; one really wants to be all alone! Those who seek lives of complete solitude have either been spurned by the world or driven away from civilisation to find deeper meaning in things that are totally outside the range of judgement and rejection. What is becoming very apparent to me is that quite a number of people are actually very lonely despite not being alone! Sounds ridiculous to be in the middle of a crowd yet be consumed by abject loneliness but surprisingly a number of people are in that very position. Robin Williams, one of the world’s most accomplished comedians this year committed suicide, he was full of life and made everyone laugh, who would have guessed how miserable he was? His state of mind was captured in a haunting quote. In his words “I used to think the worst thing in life was being all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone”

Is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ behind the wars, massacres and genocide of the Jews in the Old Testament? Certainly not! God says “love your enemies;” he does not say annihilate them. Jesus’ Father is merciful; and “he does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17). As a matter of fact, “his mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 106:1).

Those that seek evidence that our highest hallow House in the land has badly behaved, must have seen on TV and read in the papers how uncouth and disgraceful they are. Those that still are not convinced, I have nothing more to say to them as they have obviously lost their moral compass. What we saw were grown men behaving like rent a mob and scaling the fence to force their way into the inner sanctum of the House.

In January 1966, Nigerians witnessed the first ever military intervention in the politics of their nation. To the applause of many of us, they sacked the first republic and instituted military rule. Some 30 years later when democracy returned to the polity, the earlier ovation to the men in uniform had waned as they too were found guilty of the same vices that informed their sacking of the civilian government. Against this backdrop, it was imagined that perhaps the nation would have been better off if democracy, the acclaimed best system of government in the world had been allowed to grow in our nation. Nigerian politicians the argument continues would have matured and learnt to practice democracy in its true form. Since 1999 however, we have had no less than 15 unbroken years of civilian rule yet we have had nothing other than “democracy with tears”. Why on earth is Nigeria unable to produce “sane” politicians?
