Mistaken notions about food policy – 1 (CASSAVA BREAD AS CASE STUDY)

As a demonstration of personal preference for cassava bread, the President is in order. And as the transient occupant of Aso Rock, he and Mrs Jonathan can eat whatever they choose. But, it is a grave error to mistake what is a personal preference for a sound national food policy. It is almost certain that cassava bread, as staple in the Presidency, will not outlast Jonathan himself.

THE House of Representatives is gradually living up to its name. Since Hon. Waziri Tambuwal took over as the Speaker a little over a year ago, this chamber, formerly more renowned for its corruption, scandals and disgraceful scuffles over money and power which, during the Patricia Etteh-gate led to the death of Hon. Aminu Safana (a medical doctor) is gradually undergoing self-redemption.

Six new refineries hurray! But not yet Uhuru!

Many Nigerians believe that the ever-present challenges of fuel scarcity and subsidy could be conveniently resolved if new refineries are built, as national demand cannot obviously be met from the antiquated facilities available in existing government refineries. In recognition of this inadequacy, 23 licences for new refineries were approved by the authorities; 20 of these went to investors from the private sector, while the federal government and Chinese investors undertook to build additional refineries in Kogi, Lagos and Bayelsa States respectively.

HOW DOES JESUS SAVE?

Jesus is our Saviour, but how exactly does he save? Paul says he saves by paying for our sins with his blood. (Ephesians 1:7). But why listen to the servant when we can listen to the Son? As with all such questions, God has a definitive answer. He points to Jesus and says to us: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” (Mark 9:7). For salvation’s sake, Christians need to listen to Jesus.

Governors and the law

Last week the Federal Court of Appeal handed down a long-expected judgment in a suit instituted by the elected Chairmen of local governments in Imo state against the governor of the state, Mr. Rochas Anayo Okorocha. In their suit, the chairmen prayed the court to declare ultra vires the decision by Mr. Okorocha acting in his power as the governor of the state, to depose them, and in so doing to recognize their stature as an independent tier of government.

One man one vote: Impossible in Edo

On Saturday, June 25, 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan gave a solemn assurance at a political rally in Benin City that the Edo State Governorship election of July 14, 2012 will be a ‘one man one vote’ affair and that it would be free and fair. Some two weeks earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo in a similar rally at the same venue had made the same pledge.

A zealous educationist who began her profession as a primary school teacher, Prof.Omoegun rose from her humble beginning by virtue of her hardwork and ardent desire to be a success. She served as a Head of Department from 2004 to 2006 at the Faculty, and has also served as Chairman of the University of Lagos Counseling Centre Management Committee.

Home, my home!

They say home is where the heart is and that normally assumes a home is a place. A place where one can lay a weary head, find some emotional and physical nourishment and retreat from the world to refresh and re energise. In the process of my personal evolution I have concluded that a home does not necessarily have to be a place; a physical location.
