Awka—THE Amichi Anglican Diocese in Anambra State has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency for South East roads, most of which are in a deplorable condition. Rising from it synod at Amichi, the Church observed that the condition of the roads was adversely affecting the economic wellbeing of the people of the zone and argued that something positive needs to be done to ameliorate the situation. Of the federal roads in the area, the worst are the Enugu –Onitsha, Aba –Ikot Ekpene and the Onitsha-Nnewi-Amichi-Uga-Okigwe highways, which pass through the diocese.

The Diocese of Nnewi Anglican Communion has kicked of the building of a three storey Hostel building and another three storey classroom building for its Diocesan Hospital School of Health Technology located at Otolo Nnewi, Anambra State. The two projects are being set up as part of the 85 year Anniversary of the Nnewi Diocesan Hospital Sapphire coming up this year, and to further enhance the Anambra state government’s thrust on better health care delivery.

ABAKALIKI—A Non- Governmental Organization, Chinedu Ogah Foundation, COF weekend, said it has empowered 128 youths across the 13 local government areas of the state, as well as given 520 jobs to Ebonyi youths at the federal level as well as trained 620 on Skill Acquisition in different spheres of human endeavour. The NGO also distributed welfare packages such as wrappers to widows in the 20 wards of Ikwo LGA of the State even as it gave an undisclosed amount of cash and gift items to hospitals, nursing mothers and the less privileged in the State.

THE motto of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, is “Rest is sweet after labour.” However, this is far from reality. The Nigerian pensioners are treated like outcasts instead of like the senior citizens they are. In most of the five states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo which make up the South East zone especially, retired civil servants and primary school teachers are now literally eating their own vomit as they have not been paid their gratuities and pensions in the last 16 years. A survey by the South East Voice showed that some of the pensioners received sums as low as N450 a month as pensions after 35 years of meritorious service to their fatherland.
