A University convocation lecturer is expected to make fundamental statements for the progress of society. Indeed, the occasion is not for generalized comments that add nothing to nothing. Rather, it is an apt opportunity to take a hard look at society, point to its most problematic areas and take a stand.

If you get to a seashore, every shell you don’t pick as it arrives goes back to the sea. So, you can be at
the shore and return home without a shell, just because you are not smart and sensitive enough to know how to grasp them.

It seems as if this year raced by. A most unusual year, good for some, awful for others but a year that mattered in many ways. It’s almost over and I have mixed feelings about the year; I can’t quite decide what mark to give it but all in all as years come it was rather interesting.
