ACTING President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday February 16, made his debut on the international stage. It was at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State Summit which had been on hold due to President Umaru Yar’Adua’s poor health. It was a befitting one for him as 10 of the 13 expected ECOWAS leaders showed up and the rest were represented.

Congress had long before prohibited Black militia, and administrative rules prohibited Black service in the standing forces. But in the War of 1812, Captain Perry’s crews could not be filled without arming Blacks. “Veterans” of the war were entitled (apparently by Congressional act) to land bounties on the public domain.

He should put the power vested in his office to good and immediate use. If other Nigerians, including members of the National Assembly, governors and traditional rulers have tried to no avail to reach the President and know something of his health, it should not be said that the Acting President equally failed.

The American authorities must be cautious that the predictable life term or long term jail sentence or indeed execution of Muttalab would not only turn Farouk into a martyr worthy of emulation by other young Islamic fundamentalist prospects, but may also make the U.S. to miss a great opportunity to enlist the young Nigerian in counter propaganda against terrorism, and suicide attacks and the deliberate promotion of Islam as a religion of peace among young Muslims.

IN Nigeria, the law means nothing, both to the rulers and their subjects. The term, “rule of law”, is a misnomer here. It is not just the government that has a very poor grasp of rules and laws. Everywhere you look in Nigeria, you will see evidence of the rule of indiscipline and lack of order.

There are at least three reasons Jonathan will not be on the ballot in 2010; and if he forces himself on it disaster will follow. One reason, and one reason only, dictates this letter to Mrs Jonathan. She can ignore it if she likes. But, at least half a dozen people (Mustapha, Ekwueme, Obasanjo, El-Rufai, Ribadu, Soludo etc ) who were warned on this page and who ignored the warning are now licking their wounds –including her predecessor in office. I don’t want her to join them in “weeping and gnashing of teeth”. The choice however is hers.

It is easy to be lost in a sea of faces, to be surrounded by people who make so much noise that you become deaf to the isolating emptiness that is just beneath the surface. I admire the people with busting social diaries and address books as much as I pity them. Where interactions with our fellow men are concerned we sometimes forget to test for depth of feeling, preferring to enjoy the surface glitter.
