IF the truth must be told, Nigeria today is on the edge of a precipice – with its economy hanging perilously on the balance. The situation is so precarious that President Muhammadu Buhari will be seeking Emergency Powers to tackle the economy as soon as the National Assembly resumes from its vacation on September 12, 2016.

I’ve often argued in this column that with better communication not only would people’s perception of government action improve, so would its strategies and overall ability to meet its objectives. Carrying Nigerians along has always been a problem for successive administrations, with public officials in Nigeria seemingly (and bewilderingly) believing their electorates’ feelings and opinions matter little.

Nigeria’s journey from fraternal hostility to national integration was on course (at least with no major or visible bumps) for nearly a quarter of a century after the civil war ended. But from the mid- 1990s onward the country entered a new and sustained phase of ethnic tension following a long period of military rule led by Nigerians from the North of the country.
Nigerians and their origin
Any list of appointments is scru-tinised by Nigerians to see whether it contains the names of someone from their state or political zone. If the list contains no one from their area, they instinctively reject the list and complain that their people are marginalised.
