Once upon a time in this country, election petitions were settled within the two-month intervals between the polls and swearing-in of elected officials. For instance, the staggered elections of 1979 culminated in the presidential poll on August 11, 1979.

’Under the PDP the only thriving industry in Nigeria is Elections. Local Government Elections, State Elections and Federal Government elections are run through the years and most of those processes are never concluded. Most of the brilliant legal luminaries rotate from one court to the other, prosecuting or defending election petitions. The Judiciary have abandoned criminal cases and millions are in prisons awaiting trials.

LEXICAL globalization can be likened to the spread of virus in the operating systems of computers. Like harmattan, it windlessly spreads. Ask the road side mechanic- “wetin dey happen” he promptly replies “economic meltdown ni”. Ask him what economic meltdown is- he has no clue.

I’d begun and nearly finished the article before unforeseen circumstances led to my changing course and choosing to take stock of certain developments in our polity in the course of the year. I’d tried to avoid this because doing it would mean commenting on the bleak picture our country presents at this time of the year in the last few years. Past editions of TALKINGPOINT written about this time of the year would bear out my claim.
