President Buhari’s much-advertised fight against corruption has degenerated into a demolition derby. As happened with many previous efforts to fight corruption in Nigeria, different outposts of power and influence in the president’s coterie appear determined to use anti-corruption as a cover to settle intra-palace scores.

The whirlwind that has been rocking the inner political circles of President Muhammadu Buhari hit its crescendo on Thursday, December 15, 2016, with the rejection of the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu, an Assistant Police Commissioner, as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. That back stabbing by the Senate, automatically, set back the hands of Mr. President’s avowed determination to eliminate corruption before it kills Nigerians, and raises numerous questions about the calibre and character of persons he recruited to help him prosecute the corruption war.

As the National Assembly settle down to drill through the content of the 2017 Appropriation Bill submitted to it by President Muhammadu Buhari, many executives in the private sector have already seen reasons to worry about 2017 fiscal year though some expressed satisfaction with the budget.
