A few years back, some international soothsayers predicted that Nigeria would be unable to survive a likely turmoil in 2015. For two simple reasons, everyone suspected that such a fate would be the handiwork of our politicians.

It is easy to find evidence on a daily basis that some Nigerians are bent on undoing the nation. With the revelation last week by Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), that the agitations for secession are being funded by looters, no other group is more responsible for our dilemma than our wealthy political class.

Our burden now is to disallow the political class from manipulating ethnic and religious sentiments to destabilize the polity. Nigeria being a secular state as our constitution provides makes the column for religion in official records superfluous

Nigerians below age 30 are obviously not old enough to know about the wonderful ruling party of the second republic known as the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). The elderly may also have forgotten much of the exploits of that party. But it has been the most miraculous of Nigeria’s political parties more notoriously famous than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that could not manage its ‘victories’ at the polls.

Exactly six years ago, this writer and a few colleagues on account of ‘security reasons’ had to cancel a trip to the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, ASCON Badagry where we were scheduled to participate in a manpower development programme.
