Chigaemezu Nkwocha, whose stage name is ExpensiveVibes had a chat with Vanguard Newspapers following the release of his new single titled “Kilimanjaro”. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
I suppose, ExpensiveVibes is your stage name? If so, why did you choose the name?
Yes, ExpensiveVibes is my stage name.
I chose that name because my style of music is different and unique from others. I believe my sound carries a certain value and quality that stands out. Just like when you can afford something expensive, you naturally treat it with more care and importance—that’s the same energy behind my music.
“ExpensiveVibes” represents originality, quality, and something people should appreciate and hold onto.
And also, Kilimanjaro? What is the message there? What inspired you to sing that song?
“Kilimanjaro” was inspired by admiration of beauty and confidence. As you know, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, so I used it as a metaphor to describe the beauty and presence of a woman’s body in a bold and artistic way.
I wasn’t singing about any particular lady—it’s more of a general expression of appreciation. The idea is that her body is so striking and captivating, it stands tall and stands out, just like Kilimanjaro. It’s just that kind of vibe her body is giving, lol.
Overall, the song is about celebrating beauty, confidence, and that standout presence someone can have.
Is Kilimanjaro your first release, or you have other releases?
“Kilimanjaro” isn’t my first release. I have other songs out as well, like “Jara,” which you can also listen to.
And beyond that, I have many other sweet jams I’m still cooking in the studio. There’s a lot more great music on the way.
When did you start music, and what brought you into music?
I didn’t start music at an adult age—it’s something that has been in me since I was a kid. Music flows in my blood. My dad is also a very good traditional singer, so I grew up around music and that played a big role in shaping me.
Being exposed to that kind of environment naturally inspired me and made me fall in love with music from an early age. It’s not just something I do—it’s part of who I am.
What should your fans expect after Kilimanjaro?
My fans should expect more good music and a higher level of creativity after “Kilimanjaro.” I’m working on dropping more sweet jams that carry different vibes but still maintain my unique sound.
I’m also putting in more effort to grow, improve, and deliver quality music consistently. There’s a lot coming—new releases, better visuals, and a stronger connection with my fans.
Is there any chance that you will do real African music someday, something that has highlife tune or some ingredient of the type of song your father sang?
Yes, definitely. That’s actually part of who I am. I grew up around that real African sound because of my dad, so it’s something I truly connect with.
I’m open to doing more songs with highlife elements and traditional influences. In fact, I plan to blend that authentic African vibe with my modern, unique style to create something special.
So my fans should definitely expect that kind of sound from me—it’s something I carry naturally.
