Every year, Nigeria budgets billions of Naira to finance all round national development, especially in the economic, political and social spheres. In this year’s budget, the Federal Government has proposed to spend N4.749 trillion. Whether this will translate to significant development, at the end of the day, is another kettle of fish, as implementation has always been a big problem.

For a wide majority of Nigerians, the subject matter of corruption has been the bane of development in the country. It is also true that almost every government in the country, especially since the return of democratic rule in 1999, has been mouthing anti-corruption initiatives as a policy of government.

The present arguments being canvassed by antagonists of the transformation in the petroleum sector is premised among other things, on the fact that many African countries subsidise petrol for their citizens. At the risk of sounding harsh, I dare say that this argument is a classic case of half truth.

ON September 15, 1963, during the American civil rights movement, the American terrorist group Ku Klux Klan, which uses twisted Christian language to support its racist ideology, set off a bomb in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where civil rights activists often congregated.
