SINCE the campaign for the July 14 governorship election kicked off in Edo State, the activities of Edo youths have been consistently hallmarked by the intellectual need to place government within a comprehensive, practical and imaginative context.

THERE comes a time in the history of a people when no matter how much God shows His blessing of benevolence on them, there must be a cog on the wheels of progress.

THE Federal Government’s national transformation programme is expected to transform our power system, roads and railway systems; our education and health systems; unemployment, budget deficit and inflation; government’s high recurrent expenditure and so on.

On January 1, Nigerians woke up to find that petrol price had been increased to 140 naira from the 65 naira per litre, the reason being that government was paying N91 subsidy for every litre of fuel sold at the filling stations across the country and it was no longer economically sustainable to continue to do so.

THE almighty attitude of some governments in this country is amazing. It appears they feel that governments have absolute and unquestionable powers over those they govern. And their decision or pronouncements must always be final.

YOUR Excellency, I wish to use this medium to write to you because no body or media would suffice to properly contextualize the issues which you and your contemporaries have raised recently in the national media, issues to which I would want to comment upon and advise you.

ON the back page of THISDAY Newspapers of Friday June 8, 2012, Nasir El-Rufai in a piece entitled “Anambra’s Budget of Misplaced Priorities” displayed what was in fact a misplaced aggression against Anambra State – her Governor, Mr. Peter Obi and her people.

I read President Goodluck Jonathan’s speech on Democracy Day in the Vanguard Newspaper Online and I felt so disappointed. Without regret, I found its contents the least lucid of all such speeches from the nation’s first citizens since the first republic to date, and including the speeches by all military heads of state.

PERHAPS, if he had caved in to pressure piled on him by many stakeholders in Edo politics to throw his hat in the ring for the governorship seat, multi-billionaire businessman-cum- politician, Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, would have by now been traversing the nooks and crannies of the state, mounting the soap box to articulate his promises to the people. Such is the theatrics that have been going on in Edo State in the name of electioneering.

ABIA State is a case study.’ The statement came from no lesser authority than the number one crime buster of Nigeria , Alhaji M D Abubakar- the Acting Inspector General of Nigeria Police during his recent visit to Abia as he was received at the hallowed Executive Chamber, Government House Umuahia.
