THOUGH the 2018 World Consumer Rights Day,  WCRD, had come and gone,  this year’s edition which held on March 15, 2018,  drew a global focus on the fast evolving, ubiquitous marketplace enabled by the Internet. The theme set for the 2018 celebration by Consumers International, CI, the global consumer protection watchdog, was Making Digital Marketplaces Fairer in recognition of the growing challenges of protecting consumers in a new market that transcends physical borders, ignores geographical boundaries and confirms the age old maxim that the world has truly become a global village.

Even at the best of times, mortality has never been a subject that sits easily in conversations let alone in circumstances where it involves a loved one hobbled by an ailment with potentially life-threatening outcome. In such situations, even discussions about commonplace issues tend to be a torturous experience for families and friends. This is especially so if it is a protracted ailment as was the case with Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, the late chief press secretary to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.

In November 2010, in a tribute to Stephen J. Solarz, a former nine-term New York congressman, Douglas Martin wrote that he was a “torrent of activity” supporting it with a statement issued by the late lawmaker’s office that “during his first six months in Congress, he made 12 speeches on the House floor, co-sponsored 370 bills, held 11 news conferences, made 24 trips to his district and attended 99 events there, visited 23 subway stations, sent constituents 513,720 pieces of mail and took an 18-day tour of the Middle East.”

Many will never forget the unprecedented labour crisis that engulfed the state Mid 2015 which seems unsolvable considering the poor revenue status of the state of Osun. Today, normalcy has returned to the Bola Ige complex which housed the state civil service. How he managed through remains a mystery till date.
