ORGANISED labour and its civil society allies, under the umbrella of Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO), will today in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) stage a mass protest to protest government planned full deregulation of the down stream oil sector among others.

“Global economic downturn and trade union action to sustain decent work and decent pay agenda”, was the thrust of a symposium put to together by the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), to mark the world decent workday, held recently in Lagos.

A few days ago, leaders of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in the nation’s schools and colleges met at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, to examine the state of education in the country especially in the school and colleges as well as welfare of members. For NASU leaders, primary and post primary schools are the most neglected both in infrastructure and welfare of staff.

MEMBERS of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), have decried state nonchalant attitude of state governments towards the welfare of workers in the nation’s schools and colleges.

THURSDAY, October 1, the nation marked her 49 years of nationhood. For leaders of workers in the nation’s textile and garment industry, it was an auspicious day to bring labour leaders, rights activists, employers and others together to look at the journey so far.

FACTS emerging from factories across the country indicate that employers avid for profit at all cost is rapidly compounding their care free attitude to health and safety issues at work places. Almost on a daily basis, various degrees of industrial accidents are recorded, from minor to major injuries to employees.
