As graduate unemployment rate soars in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, report has revealed that students in these sub-Saharan African countries no longer see their future in conventional salaried employment, but rather in self-employment. The research which was conducted by more than 6000 final-year students and focus groups with students in all four African countries is a focal point of discuss at the ‘Going Global’, the British Council’s annual conference for leaders of international education in London.

“You don’t have that in a regular Nigerian university where you are expected to follow a set of rules in doing your course. But here, you have professors who are not too strict, who unlike most Nigerian professors allow you to explore, make your mistakes and they pick you up; you have friends who are not looking at how rich or poor you are. There is this wholeness and oneness mixed.”

In a bid to tackle the alarming deterioration of the nation’s education sector, as well as the attendant unemployment rate, the Nigeria Breweries Plc (NB), last Friday, gathered over 500 students from across five schools, in Lagos, to enlighten them on the right career paths to take. ENUGU—Teachers and pupils of a private school situated on Bisala Road, Independence Layout, Enugu, last Tuesday, foiled attempt by officials of the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, from demolishing their perimeter fence.b Officials of ECTDA, accompanied by armed policemen besieged the school at about 2.15p.m. to demolish the perimeter fence separating it from the premises of a three-star hotel in the area.
