IT was like the world crashed on the family of Mr and Mrs Chijioke Jona last Thursday when unknown gunmen murdered their only son at Gada Street in Ogbunabali community, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The parents wept uncontrollably as they narrated the sad incident to the Vanguard Metro. Their son, Alex, who was about 20 years old was among eight persons reportedly killed at different locations in Port Harcourt by suspected cultists.

Nigerians were last week treated to an unusual spectacle by a cavalcade of umbrella-wielding political campaigners who stormed major streets in the country singing and dancing in cheerful abandon. In Lagos, crowds of curious onlookers jostled to catch glimpses of the campaigners as they joyfully danced and brandished their umbrellas to the accompaniment of music.

Lagos has in recent weeks witnessed several protests by different aggrieved groups, bodies or associations. Some of these protests have political undertones bordering on the 2015 general elections.

Residents of Amokwe in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State are still unsettled since the explosion which occurred at the country home of a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, Mr. Tony Emeka Eze. The residents were thrown into panic as they thought the explosion came from a bomb activated by Boko Haram insurgents.

But his high-pitched voice and flawless command of English language punctured this misconception. The retired banker revealed that he had been in a hideout for over a year now, having narrowly escaped death from suspected assassins under the pay roll of an unnamed land grabber popularly called ‘Pastor’.
