Career paths do not always align with university degrees, and many Nigerian professionals have built successful careers in industries far removed from their fields of study. One such example is Kotun Oluwadamilola, founder of Sisi Oni Dukia and Oni Dukia Limited, who has carved a niche for herself in Lagos’ real estate sector despite graduating as a microbiologist.
Today, Oluwadamilola runs a real estate firm that offers property sales, land transactions, short-let management, facility management and consultancy services. However, her professional journey began in the laboratory after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Lagos State University (LASU).
As her interests evolved, she identified opportunities in the real estate industry, where she believed she could combine business, service and problem-solving.
To prepare for the transition, she pursued further education, earning a Master’s degree in Housing Development and Management from the University of Lagos before enrolling for an Executive MBA at Rome Business School to strengthen her technical and business expertise.
Her career shift reflects a growing trend among young Nigerian professionals who are acquiring new skills to remain competitive in a rapidly changing economy, with many finding opportunities beyond their original fields of study.
Oluwadamilola officially entered the real estate industry in 2021 after closing her first property sale, involving a house valued at about ₦150 million.
She described the transaction as the defining moment that confirmed she had found her career path, noting that witnessing her client’s excitement after receiving the keys reinforced her belief that real estate is about helping people achieve significant life milestones rather than simply closing deals.
Since then, she has built a reputation centred on professionalism, integrity and customer service, earning industry recognition, including Agent of the Year and Best Customer Service awards.
Beyond her company, Oluwadamilola has developed her personal brand, Sisi Oni Dukia, through public speaking and educational content designed to simplify real estate transactions for Nigerians.
Popularly known as “Your Next Door Realtor,” she seeks to make property buying and investment more accessible by providing practical guidance and transparent information to prospective clients.
She also leverages visual property presentations to help buyers better understand available properties before arranging inspections or making investment decisions.
Despite persistent challenges in Nigeria’s real estate sector, including rising construction costs, housing shortages and affordability concerns, demand for trusted professionals continues to grow.
For Oluwadamilola, success has come from embracing new opportunities rather than remaining confined to her academic background.
Her journey highlights how continuous learning, adaptability and entrepreneurship can open doors to success beyond one’s original field of study.
