Ghanaian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist, Barima Apenteng Agyarkwa, has intensified efforts aimed at empowering African youths and promoting talent development across the continent through initiatives designed to connect emerging talents in entertainment, sports and fashion with global opportunities.
Agyarkwa, who currently serves as Area Manager for fashion brand Evisu in the United States, is leveraging his background in business, branding and talent development to create pathways for young Africans to access international platforms, mentorship opportunities and strategic partnerships.
Speaking on his vision for Africa’s next generation, Agyarkwa stressed the importance of investing in young people and building sustainable structures capable of positioning African talents for global competitiveness.
“The evolution of Africa starts with us,” he said. “Young Africans possess enormous talent and potential. What is needed is consistent support, mentorship, exposure and collaboration that will enable them compete successfully on the global stage.”
Born in Jersey City, United States, to Ghanaian parents, Agyarkwa spent part of his early years in Ghana before returning to the United States for further education.
According to him, the experience of growing up between Africa and the United States shaped his understanding of the challenges and opportunities available to African youths, while also influencing his commitment to strengthening connections between African talents and international markets.
Over the years, he has built a reputation for promoting entrepreneurship, cultural exchange and youth development through projects focused on fashion, entertainment and sports.
His initiatives are aimed at bridging the gap between emerging African creatives and established international professionals by creating opportunities for collaboration, industry exposure and career advancement.
As Area Manager for Evisu in the United States, Agyarkwa oversees regional operations, business growth strategies and market expansion initiatives targeted at strengthening the brand’s visibility within the evolving youth and streetwear culture market.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, he has remained actively involved in philanthropy and community development efforts across Ghana and other parts of West Africa.
His programmes focus on supporting underprivileged youths through mentorship, networking opportunities and access to resources required to pursue careers within the creative and sports industries.
Much of the empowerment work has been carried out through collaborations with Under Trendsetters Reality, UTR, a New York-based creative organisation dedicated to talent exposure and cultural exchange, as well as Grand Intellects Limited, GIL, a Nigeria-based company involved in branding, talent management and business development.
Through these partnerships, Agyarkwa has facilitated mentorship sessions, empowerment programmes and networking events aimed at connecting aspiring musicians, athletes and creative professionals with internationally recognised figures in their respective industries.
His interventions have also included sponsorship support for grassroots entertainment and sporting initiatives, while creating platforms where young talents can showcase their abilities before wider audiences.
Stakeholders within Africa’s creative and sports sectors say such interventions are contributing to the strengthening of talent development structures by providing emerging professionals with access to guidance, industry knowledge and international networks capable of accelerating their growth.
Observers also note that as Africa’s creative economy and sports industries continue to expand, initiatives centred on mentorship, skills development and global exposure may play an increasingly significant role in nurturing future leaders and professionals across the continent.
Agyarkwa further advocated stronger collaboration among governments, private organisations, business leaders and development partners in unlocking opportunities for African youths.
He maintained that innovation, creativity and cultural pride remain critical tools for economic empowerment and sustainable development across Africa.
