ABUJA — A pro-democracy group has backed the emergence of Peter Obi as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for the 2027 general election, describing him as a credible and transformative alternative for Nigerians ahead of the next presidential race.
The development comes as political activity ahead of the 2027 election continues to gather momentum, with parties, interest groups and other stakeholders increasingly taking positions on prospective candidates and platforms.
The group said Obi’s ratification reflects confidence in his leadership credentials and vision for the country.
In a statement by its National Chairman, Prince Rwang Pam Jnr, the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy, COPDEM, congratulated Obi on his emergence as the NDC’s presidential flagbearer.
Expressing confidence in Obi’s prospects, the group said: “We are confident that under your leadership, the NDC will present a formidable, credible, and transformative alternative in 2027.
“Your selection as the flagbearer is a testament to your unwavering commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, and people-centered leadership. Nigerians across the country have witnessed your dedication to national development, youth empowerment, and the fight against corruption.
“COPDEM remains resolute in its mission to protect democratic values, promote electoral integrity, and ensure that the will of the people prevails.”
Pledging to work with Obi and other democratic stakeholders, the group added: “We stand ready to work with you and all genuine democrats to build a stronger, more prosperous, and united Nigeria.
“May this new journey bring renewed hope to millions of Nigerians who yearn for a better country.”
The coalition also congratulated Obi’s running mate, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and wished both men success in the journey ahead.
