Cotonou, Bénin — Ebuka Okonkwo, President of Nigerian Youth in Bénin, has issued a public advisory urging Nigerian youth residing in the Republic of Bénin to maintain strict neutrality as the country approaches its presidential election scheduled for Sunday, April 12.
In a statement released on Friday, Okonkwo emphasized the importance of peace, discipline, and responsible conduct among members of the Nigerian community living in the host country. He noted that election periods are often sensitive and require heightened caution, especially for foreign residents who may be unintentionally drawn into political discussions or activities.
He strongly advised Nigerian youth to avoid participation in political rallies, campaigns, or any form of political confrontation, warning that involvement could lead to misunderstanding, manipulation, or unnecessary tension between communities. According to him, preserving unity and protecting the image of Nigerians abroad should remain a top priority.
Okonkwo further stressed that Nigerian youth in Bénin Republic should focus on constructive engagement, community development, and maintaining peaceful coexistence with their host communities. He described discipline and restraint as key values that would help strengthen the relationship between Nigerians and local authorities.
He also reminded youth that any emergency or security-related concerns should be reported to the nearest Nigerian community support structures, including the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation(NIDO) offices or the Embassy of Nigeria in Cotonou, which remain available to provide assistance where necessary.
According to him, maintaining order and avoiding political involvement will help ensure that Nigerians in Benin Republic are not misrepresented or exposed to avoidable risks during the election period.
He concluded by extending goodwill to the government and people of Benin Republic, wishing them a peaceful, transparent, and successful presidential election process, while reiterating the commitment of Nigerian youth in the country to peaceful coexistence and respect for local laws.
