ABUJA — Senator Seriake Dickson has welcomed a group of defectors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a growing political realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential and general elections.
The defectors, largely young party members, were formally received by Dickson alongside leaders of the Nigerian Democratic Congress during a solidarity visit to his residence in Abuja on Wednesday.
Led by former APC Special Adviser on Youth Matters, Hon. Nasir Lawal, the group described their defection as a stand for inclusivity, grassroots participation, and a renewed political direction. Lawal said the move followed deep dissatisfaction with APC’s internal structure and direction, particularly the marginalization of youth and women.
According to Lawal, party activities and campaign structures had become dominated by a small circle of elites, sidelining long-time grassroots contributors. He also criticised the APC leadership for prioritizing political calculations over governance and failing to address pressing national challenges, including insecurity.
“Politics must reflect the interests of the masses,” Lawal said, explaining that the decision to join the NDC followed extensive consultations with grassroots stakeholders across states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Welcoming the defectors, Dickson, former Governor of Bayelsa State and National Leader of the NDC, described their move as a demonstration of courage and patriotism. He assured the new members of full integration into the party, directing that they be connected with NDC state chairmen nationwide to enable participation at all levels.
“I am impressed with the quality and capacity of Nigerian youths. They have what it takes to offer leadership and change the narrative of governance in our country,” Dickson said.
He reiterated the NDC’s commitment to inclusivity, noting policies that promote youth participation and affirmative action for women. He further confirmed that women political leaders who recently aligned with the party had been integrated into state structures in line with the party’s inclusion policy.
“The NDC is a party for all Nigerians. We will continue to promote greater inclusivity across all levels,” Dickson said, urging the defectors to mobilize others to join the movement.
