SOKOTO — A major political realignment is taking shape in Sokoto State as prominent members of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) formally defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in a development that could reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
The defectors, representing multiple local government areas, were led by Alhaji Bello Sani Yabo, Interim Caretaker Chairman of the NDC in Sokoto State; Hon. Ibrahim Magaji Gusau, former CPC deputy governorship candidate in 2011; and Alhaji Abbas Gandi.
Speaking at the defection ceremony, Yabo explained that the move followed extensive consultations with political associates, community leaders, and supporters across the state.
He said the decision was driven by the need to align with a party that reflects the aspirations of the people and offers a credible platform for tackling pressing socio-economic challenges.
“The National Democratic Congress represents a new political direction anchored on inclusive governance, accountability, and grassroots development. Our defection is motivated not by personal ambition but by a collective desire to reposition ourselves within a framework that prioritises the welfare and progress of ordinary Nigerians,” Yabo stated.
He urged supporters and political actors to embrace constructive politics focused on service delivery, peace, and democratic values rather than division and rivalry.
Political analysts note that the defection could significantly shift the balance of political forces in Sokoto State, especially as emerging platforms continue to expand influence ahead of forthcoming elections.
Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the influx of former CPC members would strengthen democratic participation and encourage issue-based politics addressing insecurity, poverty, and unemployment.
In response, the leadership of the NDC in Sokoto State pledged to intensify grassroots mobilisation and expand the party’s structure, aiming to build a formidable political force with a national outlook.
The development underscores a broader trend of political realignments across Nigeria, as politicians and supporters reassess party affiliations in line with evolving regional and national dynamics.
