Residents of Ofoni community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have erupted in celebration following the conferment of a prestigious Urhobo chieftaincy title on a United States-based businessman, Eric Okoko.

The development comes shortly after a period of mourning in the community, marking a shift to festivities as indigenes gathered to honour Okoko for his contributions to community development and the Urhobo Kingdom.

Okoko, who resides in the United States, was conferred with the revered title of Ogba Iroro ‘R’ Ovie Ughelli in a colourful traditional ceremony attended by over 80 chiefs from Ughelli Kingdom. He was presented with the staff of office alongside his wife, Mrs. Jennifer Okoko.

Speaking with journalists after the ceremony at his country home, Okoko described the honour as a call to greater service, pledging to use the title as a platform to advance development initiatives within the Urhobo Kingdom and his home community.

He emphasised the importance of cultural values, urging Nigerians, particularly those in the diaspora, to reconnect with their roots and preserve indigenous traditions and languages.

According to him, cultural heritage remains a vital foundation for societal growth, noting that practices handed down by previous generations should be sustained where they align with modern values.

Okoko added that the chieftaincy title places a responsibility on him to contribute meaningfully to the progress of his community, stressing his commitment to supporting development efforts whenever called upon.

Also speaking, his uncle, Chief Bozimo Agbogi, commended Okoko’s dedication and integrity, describing him as a worthy ambassador of the community whose achievements should inspire younger generations.

He noted that Okoko’s contributions to Ofoni, Ughelli and the wider Urhobo Kingdom have continued to make a positive impact, urging youths to emulate his example of hard work and commitment to community service.
