The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (formerly Abia Poly), Prof. Christopher Kalu Okoro, has outlined key achievements of the institution while tasking students on discipline, hard work, and integrity.

Prof Kalu who spoke weekend during the 32nd Matriculation ceremony said the institution had been repositioned to deliver on its mandate.

He said the institution had witnessed “transformation and growth” since he assumed office in March 2024.

The Rector praised Gov. Alex Otti for “his unprecedented support” to the institution, describing the Governor as a “transformative leader whose impact has been widely acknowledged.”

According to him, the polytechnic is witnessing its highest student enrollment in over a decade, a development he attributed to renewed confidence from parents and prospective students.

He added that the institution has expanded its academic offerings, introduced new programmes, and intensified its focus on practical skills and vocational training.

Prof. Okoro announced that the new students would be the first to benefit from facilities at the Osisioma campus, which he said boasts modern hostels and an improved learning environment.

“There is no shortcut to success. You must remain focused, attend lectures, complete your assignments, and stay disciplined”, he charged the matriculants.

The Rector warned against misconduct, stressing that the institution maintains zero tolerance for immoral or criminal behaviour, and urged students to remain law-abiding and respectful at all times.

Reaffirming his commitment to student welfare, the Rector said he operates an open-door policy and remains accessible to students whenever needed.

Prof. Okoro also expressed appreciation to key stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, members of the State House of Assembly, regulatory bodies, and the institution’s governing council and management team, for their continued support.

The ceremony featured the formal presentation of matriculating students by the various schools and academic units of the polytechnic.
