Warri’s historic homecoming and the imperative of Itsekiri unity

On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the ancient Warri Kingdom opened its arms to one of its most distinguished daughters, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This was not simply a ceremonial return; it was a moment where history, heritage, and destiny converged, reminding the Itsekiri people that the past is not merely memory, but the compass by which the present charts its course.

In a scene steeped in symbolism, she was conferred with the revered chieftaincy title of Utukpa Oritse of Warri Kingdom, also known as Ugbọnẹ́. Her investiture, further crowned by the distinguished Royal Order of Iwere (ROI), was more than an honorific; it was a dialogue between legacy and leadership, binding personal achievement with communal heritage.

Senator Tinubu, wife of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a descendant of the Malemi Udefi Obaloye lineage through her maternal ancestry, embodies a living bridge between ancestral roots and national service. Her journey from Warri to the pinnacles of governance affirms a simple truth: identity, when cherished, becomes the compass of leadership, and roots, when honored, empower vision.

Her Excellency’s address was a meditation on unity and reconciliation. She urged the Itsekiri people to transcend faction, heal divisions, and rediscover the harmony that once defined them. Reflecting on the enduring influence of Itsekiri culture in shaping her values, she thanked His Majesty for the title bestowed upon her and embraced the responsibility it carries. She pledged to convey the throne’s message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, affirming that, God willing, the aspirations of the Kingdom would receive attention at the highest level.

In an act of tangible commitment, she donated fifty million naira to support one thousand young women and girls, empowering them to expand their petty trades and strengthen economic self-reliance. With warmth and sincerity, she promised to return should her husband enter a second term, reaffirming her enduring bond with her roots.

As her convoy traversed the route from Osubi Airport to the palace of His Majesty, the impressive bridge structure along that corridor was impossible to overlook. This stands as a visible testament to infrastructural progress under the administration of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State.

Pressing engagements may not have afforded Her Excellency the opportunity to fully appreciate the 20.95-kilometre Trans Warri Road Project. This major arterial development, featuring multiple bridges and connecting key communities within Warri South Local Government Area, is distinct from the airport route. To the discerning observer, it represents far more than steel and concrete. It speaks eloquently of Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to continuity in development, building upon foundations laid by his predecessors, including His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who was present to witness the historic occasion. Such infrastructure, both functional and symbolic, demonstrates how governance aligned with foresight and consistency can leave enduring monuments to collective progress.

The orchestration of this homecoming was guided by leadership both visible and unseen. His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, continues to command profound respect for his steady and visionary stewardship. The Olu in Council ensured that the event unfolded with precision, cultural depth, and ceremonial dignity.

National and regional significance was evident in the presence of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Ọjájá II Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, the Dein of Agbor, and other eminent traditional rulers. His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, personally welcomed Her Excellency, underscoring the collaborative bond between the Kingdom and state institutions and elevating the event beyond ceremony into a moment of national resonance.

Leadership within the Kingdom was equally deserving of commendation. Hon. Godwin Ebosa warrants particular recognition for his rare steadiness of temperament, his instinct for cohesion, and his sustained commitment to the institutional strength of the Itsekiri nation. In seasons that demand restraint as much as resolve, his measured counsel and loyalty to collective purpose have proven both stabilizing and forward-looking.

Equally noteworthy are Hon. Prince Michael Diden, Chief Ayiri Emami, Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan, Hon. Chief Thomas Ereyitomi, Chief Francis Omatseye, Prince Mode Akoma, Hon. Chief Daniel Reyenieju, Hon. David Tonwe, Engr. Tuoyo Omatsuli, Amaju Pinnick, Chief Joseph Otumara, and Hon. Omimi Esquire. Their collective foresight, organization, and dedication ensured that the event was executed with elegance and profound cultural resonance.

This enumeration is by no means exhaustive. Many other distinguished sons and daughters of the Kingdom contributed significantly to the success of this historic occasion but, for want of space, cannot all be individually mentioned. Their contributions remain integral to the enduring vitality and solidarity of the Kingdom.

As a son of the Kingdom, I was honored to contribute in my own modest way, reaffirming the principle that service is measured not merely by visibility, but by fidelity to one’s community.

The Kingdom’s youth, women, and socio-cultural groups distinguished themselves through discipline, creativity, and vibrant participation. Their involvement was not ornamental; it was generational affirmation. The Itsekiris in the diaspora, though distant in miles, stood united in spirit, affirming that true belonging is measured not by geography, but by fidelity to one’s roots.

The wider Delta community also bore witness to this homecoming. Special mention is due to Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, whose eloquent advertorials elevated the welcome into a statement of shared purpose. Appreciation is equally extended to Hon. Comr. Weyinmi Isaac Agbateyiniro, my successor as Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, whose leadership of the Security Committee ensured serenity and order throughout the event.

Beyond the pageantry lies a deeper imperative. The Itsekiris were once known for speaking with one voice. That unity was not uniformity, but clarity of purpose translated into collective strength. As the nation approaches 2027, the lesson remains unmistakable: a divided people whisper, but a united people are heard.

Like Queen Esther, Her Excellency occupies a position where proximity to power converges with moral responsibility. Such alignment between heritage and national leadership carries both symbolic and practical significance.

If this renewed bond results in tangible advancement for the Kingdom, history will record it faithfully. Posterity judges not rhetoric, but impact.

Ultimately, this homecoming transcended ceremony. It was a meditation on identity, legacy, and collective destiny. As 2027 approaches, unity is no longer optional for the Itsekiri people. A Kingdom’s strength lies not only in its storied past, but in the collective resolve of its people to shape their future together.
