Traders under the aegies of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, NPMA, made up of 58 different marrkets in Lagoshas appealed to the Federal Government for urgent intervention following the recent fire outbreak and demolition of affected markets.
In a letter signed by the President of NPMA, Comrade Chinedu Ukatu, the association urged government to provide immediate compensation and support for traders who lost their businesses in the December 24, 2025 fire incident at Great Nigeria House, Balogun Market, Lagos Island.
Ukatu noted that the inferno destroyed livelihoods, leaving many families without breadwinners.
He stressed that financial assistance and palliatives were necessary to help victims recover and rebuild their businesses.
His words: “We urge the federal government to provide adequate assistance, including financial compensation, to help these individuals recover and rebuild their businesses. We also appeal for palliatives for traders whose shops were cordoned off pending evacuation of the devastated building, as they have no other means to earn a living”.
Meanwhile, NPMA commended the Lagos State Government for its efforts so far but called on the committee set up by the state to fast track the evacuation process to enable traders return to business.
The association pledged to cooperate with government on measures to prevent future disasters, while reiterating its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of traders across Lagos markets.
