For the past five years, the Ezzycare Foundation, led by Nigerian-born, U.S.-based nurse and entrepreneur Hon. Dr. Gloria C. Bertram-Okoli, has been quietly transforming lives across rural and underserved communities in Enugu State through targeted healthcare interventions and economic empowerment programmes.
The foundation organises regular free medical outreaches that provide consultations, screenings, medications, and basic procedures at no cost to residents who often lack access to quality care. Services are also delivered through Ezzycare Specialist Hospital, focusing on hypertension and diabetes screenings, maternal and child health, paediatric consultations, and health education.
“Many elderly villagers, pregnant women, and children are experiencing comprehensive care for the first time without the burden of hospital bills,” a foundation spokesperson said. “Beyond treatment, these outreaches restore dignity and reassurance to families who frequently delay seeking help due to cost.”
In parallel, the foundation has disbursed over ₦100 million in grants, business support tools, and capacity-building workshops to rural women, many of whom operate small-scale enterprises with limited access to formal credit. The initiative has enabled beneficiaries to stabilise and expand their livelihoods.
Persons living with disabilities have also received mobility aids, financial assistance, and skills training to promote independence and community integration in areas where social support remains scarce.
Dr. Bertram-Okoli, who heads the Ezzy International Group of Companies in the United States, attributes her approach to her nursing background. “Health, economic security, and dignity are deeply connected,” she said. “My work channels international experience and resources back home to create sustainable impact.”
Community leaders, women’s groups, and youth associations have partnered with the foundation, ensuring transparency, local ownership, and broader reach across the state.
In an era when many professionals build successful careers abroad, Dr. Bertram-Okoli’s model offers a compelling example of diaspora success being reinvested to uplift communities at home. For hundreds of families in Enugu, the Ezzycare Foundation’s work continues to bridge critical gaps in healthcare access and economic opportunity, proving that strategic, compassionate intervention can create lasting change.
