Delta Govt orders shutdown of illegal LPG plant in Asaba

Despite a stop-work order issued by the Delta State government, construction work is ongoing at an unapproved Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, facility located within a residential and school environment along Infant Jesus Road, Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Before now, affected residents of Imade Osazee Street and Infant Jesus Academy, both on Infant Jesus Road, Asaba, had petitioned Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, warning that the siting of the LPG facility poses a grave danger to residents and students, as it does not meet regulatory standards. The petition was duly acknowledged by the state government.

In the petition, the residents reminded the governor of the 2025 Agbor gas explosion, which caused extensive damage, claiming several lives and destroying properties worth millions of naira.

Meanwhile, the state government, through its relevant agencies, has ordered the permanent stoppage of work at the facility, citing the absence of the governor’s approval.

Speaking on the matter, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Renewal, Mr Sunday Tatabuzogwu, said enforcement officials had visited the site of the illegal gas plant and warned the operators to desist immediately or face the full weight of the law.
