Investment drive: Fix deplorable roads, investor tells Ogun govt

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

A multi-million-naira hospitality facility, Feliza Hotel and Suites, has officially commenced operations in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with its investor calling on the state government to urgently improve road infrastructure to support local and diaspora investments.

The appeal was made by the Chief Executive Officer of the hotel, Mr. Olufemi Ayeyemi, during the commissioning ceremony of the facility located in the Obada area of Ewekoro Local Government Area over the weekend.

Ayeyemi, a Canadian-based Nigerian entrepreneur, lamented that poor road networks remain a major deterrent to investment in Ogun State, despite its reputation as one of Nigeria’s emerging industrial and investment hubs.

He noted that while Ogun State has the potential to become a one-stop investment destination, inadequate infrastructure, particularly access roads, could discourage serious investors from committing resources to the state.

According to him, good road infrastructure and a strong security network are critical factors that influence investors’ decisions and align with the development vision of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Ayeyemi disclosed that he invested over ₦3 billion in the construction of Feliza Hotel and Suites, describing the project as part of his contribution to strengthening Ogun State’s hospitality and tourism sector.

He explained that the hotel was designed to meet Lagos standards and operates a unique “two-in-one” concept that allows guests to host events and lodge within the same premises.

The investor added that the facility is expected to attract more Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in Ogun, but expressed concern that the deplorable state of roads in the Obada axis could undermine that goal.

Ayeyemi specifically mentioned the road linking Obada Health Centre to the hotel, noting that its poor condition has made him reluctant to invite other potential investors to the area.

He stressed that improved public infrastructure would not only support existing businesses but also accelerate economic growth and development across local communities.

The commissioning ceremony attracted dignitaries from within and outside the state, including Otunba Segun Showunmi, convener of The Alternative Movement, who officially commissioned the hotel.

Showunmi described the project as a world-class investment, noting that the event centre is comparable to high-end facilities in Lekki, Lagos, and would place Obada on the global hospitality map.

He urged the State government to prioritize infrastructure support for indigenous investors, warning against a situation where foreign investors receive preferential treatment over locals.

“We cannot be supporting foreign investors with good roads and infrastructure while neglecting our own who have invested massively in the state,” Showunmi said.

He announced that he would personally engage Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure that one of the ongoing road projects is extended to the Obada axis to support the hotel and surrounding communities.

Showunmi also highlighted the economic benefits of the investment, including job creation during construction, increased commercial activities, and multiplier effects for residents of the area.

Also speaking at the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Dr. Ololade Kehinde, described Feliza Hotel and Suites as a massive and laudable project.

Kehinde said the commissioning demonstrated that Ogun State is safe, business-friendly, and open to investors from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

He noted that hospitality investments are critical to economic growth, as they provide platforms for tourism, business engagements, and social interactions.
