By Adeola Badru
The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting tourism and hospitality investments as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s economy, create employment opportunities and position Oyo as a leading destination for business and leisure travellers.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Wasiu Olutunbosun, stated this during a press conference organised by The Jagz Hotel, Ibadan, where the hospitality outfit formally presented its newly appointed General Manager, Mr Jonathan Odia, and unveiled plans for expansion and industry development initiatives.
Olutunbosun said the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde would continue to provide an enabling environment for investors in the tourism and hospitality sector, describing private sector participation as critical to the state’s economic growth agenda.
“The hospitality and tourism industry remains one of the most important sectors for economic development, job creation and revenue generation.“
“As a government, we are committed to creating the right atmosphere for businesses to thrive and for investors to have confidence in Oyo State,” he said.
The commissioner noted that investments in quality hospitality infrastructure would complement the government’s efforts to attract conferences, events and tourists to the state.
“We are pleased to see indigenous businesses making significant investments in hospitality. Such investments not only improve service standards but also contribute to the overall development of our economy through direct and indirect employment opportunities,” Olutunbosun added.
He further stated that the state’s tourism development strategy prioritised collaboration between government and private operators to unlock the vast potential of the sector.
“Our vision is to make Oyo State one of Nigeria’s foremost tourism and hospitality destinations. To achieve this, government cannot work alone.“
“We need strategic partnerships with investors and industry operators who share our commitment to excellence and sustainable growth,” he said.
Olutunbosun commended The Jagz Hotel for its growth trajectory within a relatively short period and expressed confidence that its expansion plans would further boost the hospitality landscape in the state and beyond.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of The Jagz Hotel, Mr Lugard Agbomoagan, said the hotel had recorded significant progress since commencing operations 20 months ago, driven by a vision to deliver hospitality excellence rooted in African values and culture.
“When we opened our doors 20 months ago, our vision was simple but bold: to create a hospitality excellence that is without borders and limits in Africa.“
“We set out to build an experience that feels luxurious, authentic and proudly African, while remaining deeply connected to our culture, our warmth and our unique way of serving people,” he said.
According to him, the hotel has witnessed steady growth in occupancy levels, expanded its corporate clientele base and increased its brand recognition both within and outside Africa.
“From the very beginning, we have remained focused on delivering exceptional service, maintaining strong operational standards and constantly improving the guest experience.“
“More importantly, we have built meaningful relationships with our staff and guests. People trust The Jagz, they return and they confidently recommend us to others,” Agbomoagan said.
The managing director disclosed that the hotel was embarking on a major expansion programme, including the addition of more rooms, upgraded facilities and improved infrastructure aimed at enhancing guest comfort and service delivery.
“We are currently moving forward with expansion plans that include additional rooms, improved guest facilities and upgraded infrastructure that will allow us to serve a wider range of guests more efficiently and comfortably.”
“Our goal is to position The Jagz as a leading hospitality destination in the region, capable of hosting premium events, larger gatherings and world-class experiences,” he said.
He also announced the brand’s expansion into Abuja, describing the move as part of its long-term strategy to establish a strong continental presence.
“This expansion reflects our confidence in the future of hospitality, tourism, business mobility and regional economic integration across Africa. The Jagz is positioning itself as an emerging African hospitality brand with a long-term continental outlook,” he added.
Agbomoagan further announced plans to host The Jagz Hospitality Conference 2026, which he described as a platform for industry stakeholders to discuss the future of hospitality in Nigeria and Africa.
“This conference is more than just an event for us. It is a space for important conversations, collaboration and fresh ideas about the future of hospitality in Nigeria.“
“We look forward to bringing together operators, investors, policymakers and industry leaders to exchange ideas, inspire innovation and help shape the future of our sector,” he said.
As part of efforts to strengthen its leadership structure, Agbomoagan formally introduced Mr Jonathan Odia as the new General Manager of the hotel.
He said Odia’s appointment underscored the organisation’s commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement.
“A brand like The Jagz needs an experienced hospitality professional whose career includes valuable experience with internationally recognised brands.“
“His appointment reflects our continued commitment to raising standards, strengthening our operations and delivering even better experiences for our guests,” he said.
Agbomoagan expressed appreciation to the hotel’s staff, partners, guests and members of the media for their support since its inception.
“As we look ahead, our vision remains clear and inspiring. We are building a brand that will endure. At The Jagz, we believe we are doing more than running a hotel; we are contributing to the future of hospitality in Africa,” he said.
Speaking for the first time in his new role, Odia expressed appreciation to the management of The Jagz Hotel for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to build on the achievements recorded by the organisation since its establishment.
He described his appointment as both an honour and a responsibility, noting that the hospitality industry was evolving rapidly and required innovation, consistency and exceptional service delivery.
“I am delighted to join The Jagz at such an exciting stage of its growth. The hotel has already established a reputation for excellence within a relatively short period, and I look forward to working with the management team and staff to consolidate on these achievements.“
“Together, we will continue to enhance guest experiences, strengthen operational standards and position The Jagz as a leading hospitality brand in Nigeria and across Africa,“ Odia said.
He said his immediate focus would be on deepening service excellence, developing talent within the organisation and supporting the hotel’s expansion agenda.
“Hospitality is ultimately about people and memorable experiences. Our goal is to ensure that every guest who walks through our doors receives world-class service that reflects the warmth, professionalism and excellence for which The Jagz is becoming known.“
“I am excited about the future and the opportunities ahead as we embark on the next phase of growth,” he added.
