The ‘Documentary Industry’ has been named as the Best Documentary at the just concluded 2025 Nigerian Entertainment and Media Creative Excellence Awards (NEMCEA), marking a major milestone for the project and its creative team.

The recognition comes at a crucial development stage for the documentary, which is still in production and scheduled for release in 2027.

The award highlights the growing confidence in the project’s vision and its relevance to Nigeria’s evolving creative economy.

‘Documentary Industry’ is being directed by two cousins, Juanita Abii and Munachi Abii, whose combined backgrounds span law, music, film, and media.

They are part of a multidisciplinary team of producers, researchers, writers, and visual artists committed to telling a deeply researched and accessible story about the Nigerian music business.

The strength of the project lies not only in its subject matter, but also in the team’s lived experience within the industry, allowing the documentary to balance credibility, empathy, and creative storytelling.

At its core, Industry seeks to empower artists and creatives who often navigate the music business without sufficient knowledge of contracts, royalties, ownership, or long-term sustainability.

By breaking down complex systems in a relatable and engaging way, the documentary aims to close the information gap that has historically disadvantaged many creators.

It positions education not as a dry exercise, but as a necessary tool for survival and growth in an increasingly globalized industry.

Beyond its educational mission, Industry represents a shift toward a more modern form of Nigerian documentary filmmaking that is entertaining, visually dynamic, and culturally grounded. The project blends rigorous research with compelling narration and mixed-media storytelling, reflecting global documentary standards while remaining distinctly Nigerian.

As production continues, the team welcomes collaborators and supporters who share this vision. Those interested in furthering the work can reach out via juanita@industrydocumentary.com
