Pastoralists back Tinubu on creation of Livestock Ministry

By Gabriel Ewepu

ABUJA- PASTORALITS under the auspices of Fulbe Development Association of Nigeria, FULDAN, weekend, declared a stand and support for President Bola Tinubu, over the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development amid oppositions.

In a document made available to Vanguard, the National Secretary, FULDAN, Engr Abdulrahman Ahmad, said following the need to diversify the economy as championed by the President, it became imperative for the establishment of a dedicated Livestock Ministry based on a pivotal recommendation.

Abdulrahman also said those opposing the creation of the Ministry need to look deep into the other side of the Ministry which it intends to bring to the table.

He said: “In the ongoing discourse about Nigeria’s economic diversification and the need to bolster underperforming sectors, the establishment of a dedicated Livestock Ministry emerges as a pivotal recommendation.

“As we strive to reduce our reliance on oil revenues, there is an undeniable need to tap into sectors with substantial growth potential. The livestock sector stands out as a prime candidate for such focused attention and investment.

“Opponents of this proposal argue that the creation of a new ministry would lead to bureaucratic expansion and increased government expenditure. However, these concerns, while valid, overlook the long-term benefits and efficiencies a specialized ministry would bring.

“The establishment of a Livestock Ministry is a strategic move towards realizing the full potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector. It is not merely an expansion of bureaucracy but a visionary step that promises significant returns in terms of economic growth, job creation, and food security. It is time for Nigeria to take decisive action and invest in the future of our livestock sector.

“Why a Livestock Ministry is Essential? Economic Diversification and Growth: The livestock sector, encompassing animal husbandry, dairy farming, and meat processing, holds immense promise for boosting Nigeria’s GDP.

“A dedicated Livestock Ministry would channel resources and expertise into this sector, fostering innovation, enhancing productivity, and promoting exports. This move would significantly diversify our economic base, providing a buffer against fluctuations in oil prices.

“Job Creation: The creation of a Livestock Ministry would spur job creation across various sub-sectors. From veterinary services to feed production and meat processing, the opportunities are vast. This would not only provide employment but also enhance livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, thus reducing poverty and curbing rural-urban migration.

“Food Security: Nigeria’s nutritional needs are growing alongside its population. Enhancing livestock production can substantially increase the availability of protein-rich foods, such as meat, milk, and eggs. This would improve dietary standards, combat malnutrition, and contribute to the overall health and well-being of Nigerians.

“Sustainable Practices: A focused ministry would ensure the adoption of best practices in livestock management, including sustainable grazing, waste management, and disease control. This would mitigate environmental degradation and promote sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring the long-term viability of the sector.

However, he (Abdulrahman) said despite critics opposing the creation of a new ministry, and that it would lead to bureaucratic expansion and increased government expenditure, there are impacts it is going to make on the country’s GDP

“However, these concerns, while valid, overlook the long-term benefits and efficiencies a specialized ministry would bring: Focused Expertise and Efficiency: A dedicated ministry allows for concentrated expertise and targeted efforts. The Livestock Ministry would streamline processes, enhance policy implementation, and deliver better outcomes. The benefits of such specialization far outweigh the costs involved.

“Economic Multiplier Effect: Investment in the livestock sector can have a significant economic multiplier effect. Improved livestock farming would spur related economic activities, generate substantial revenue, and potentially offset the initial costs of establishing the ministry. The long-term economic gains, including increased tax revenues and reduced import bills, are compelling.

“Learning from Global Best Practices: Countries like Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand have successfully leveraged dedicated agricultural and livestock ministries to transform their economies. Nigeria can adapt and implement these best practices to suit our unique context, ensuring sustainable growth and development.

“Integrated Development Approach: The Livestock Ministry would work in synergy with other ministries, such as Agriculture, Environment, and Health, fostering an integrated approach to national development. This collaboration would address the multifaceted challenges facing the livestock sector, creating comprehensive and effective solutions”, he said
