The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) has expressed support for the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals in tackling illegal mining activities across the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the President of the Nigerian Youth Congress, Jethro Kaluba, commended the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, for deploying eight gun trucks to enhance the operational capacity of the Mining Marshals led by Attah Onoja.

According to the statement, the deployment of the operational vehicles reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources and strengthening security operations against illegal mining.

“The deployment of operational vehicles demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources and supporting security personnel engaged in the fight against illegal mining across the country,” the statement said.

The group noted that the intervention would improve enforcement operations, boost investor confidence in the mining sector, and increase national revenue generation in line with the government’s development agenda.

The NYC also stated that Nigeria was recording measurable progress in the fight against illegal mining, citing reports that more than 300 suspects have been arrested, about 150 offenders prosecuted, and several convictions secured since the establishment of the Mining Marshals.

“These achievements clearly show that the objectives behind the establishment of the Mining Marshals are being realized,” the statement added.

The youth body praised the courage, professionalism and dedication of the officers and personnel of the Mining Marshals, while pledging continued support for the Onoja-led team.

It further called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of any individuals, including security personnel, alleged to be undermining the operations of the Mining Marshals.

“No individual or institution should be above the law,” the statement stressed, noting that discipline and adherence to the rule of law are critical to national development.

Describing illegal mining as a major threat to Nigeria’s economy and security, the NYC said the practice deprives the country of valuable revenue, damages the environment, fuels criminal activities and banditry, and undermines economic growth.

The organisation therefore urged communities, traditional rulers, youth groups, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information to support efforts aimed at eradicating illegal mining across the country.
