During the week, news went viral on social media that afro-beat maverick, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s daughter, Motunrayo Kuti, may be suicidal because she declared that she was suffering from depression, just as Harrysong did recently.

However, in a chat with Showtime, she confirmed that she was suffering from depression but explained why she can never be suicidal, no matter the degree of depression.

“I am depressed, things are going downhill; I can’t depend or keep depending on my royalties. I am tired of Nigeria. But I have a child, never can I be suicidal. I just don’t want to do dirty business. All I want to do is just rest because no life here in Nigeria”, she said.

Speaking on her brother, Seun Kuti’s recent Grammy Award nomination, she said;

“Seun used to be my 5 and 6, so I’m very happy for him. I feel proud because I know he works hard. It’s a thing of greatness and we, the family are happy for him as far as I know.”

I haven’t heard of any Nigerian artiste nominated so it’s a good step for them and for recognition. Although you can’t compare Seun’s music to that of other Nigerian artistes, but it’s a good start. Seun works hard for his music content and they are very deep and educational. I hope he gets a nomination again though.”

She added that if her father, Fela, were alive, he would have been excited to see Seun receive such international recognition.

“It’s been over 20-years, I don’t think his soul is still around, but he will feel like every father I think, proud of his son”, she concluded.
