UGHELLI —TWO persons were yesterday confirmed dead after unidentified gunmen stormed Unenurhe community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday evening and shot randomly at residents in the community.
A security source at the area told Saturday Vanguard that the incident was a fallout of an earlier clash between residents of Unenurhe community and their neighbours from Uwherhu which occurred in July, leading to the death of two persons from both communities.
The source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “The armed hoodlums suspected to be from a neighbouring community, stormed Unenurhe on Thursday evening, parked their car, and shot randomly at a gathering of locals in the community.
“Though investigation into the matter is ongoing, we believe the incident was a spillover of the July clash between both communities.
Absolving his community from the incident, President General of Uwherhu community, Chief Ogharivi Utso said: “One person died at the scene of the incident on Thursday while a second victim who coincidentally was from Uwheru, died on Friday morning.
“The incident has nothing to do with Uwherhu community as there is no pointer to the fact that the gunmen were from Uwheru. As a community, we would do everything within our power to work with the police in ensuring that the culprits are brought to book.”
Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka promised to find out more details on the incident but was yet to do so as at press time.
