Waje, Toke and a Model
From the simple and demure to the brazen and ridiculous, the off shoulder has displayed a never before seen staying power on the fashion scene. From 2015 through 2016 and now 2017, the trend has gone through several stages of evolution and still has not found a resting point.
While others are giving tips on how to wear the trend, we would rather be showing you who to wear the trend like.
Waje, Toke and a Model
DO GLAM like Toke: You would imagine that the off the shoulder will be stuck with evening and casual wear but apparently not . With this blue piece Toke Makinwa proves without an iota of doubt that you can turn up at an afternoon meeting with your shoulders bared and appear no less sophisticated , appropriate and formal, not to mention severely glamorous.
DO: These simple tear drop earrings are jst the thing to pull off this look. The two tone pointed pumps are also fantastic and saves the outfit from utter monotony. Do nubuck or suede.
DON’T: Wear to a wedding, no matter the temptation. Do not do severe hair and never, ever wear a neck chain.
Do SEXY like Frankie & Co
Okay, you would think the whole point of this trend is sexy, yet unfortunately most indulgers end up more drab than anything else. Not the model for this indigenous designer to the stars Frankie&Co in this ultra sexy mini version of this trend which has also been spotted on songstress Omawumi and Maria Okanrende.
It matters little what colour or print it is. All that matters is that it is ludicrously short but covers enough to be just decent. In addition, it is an Ankara print, and you know what that means.
DO: You already know the rules of wearing the mini. It applies here more than anywhere. Like the model, do with stilettos to give the legs that mile –long look. Keep accessories neutral and minimalist including hair. Everything has to give way for that little brief attire to take centre stage.
DON’T: Forget to carry yourself as though the world were at your feet .
Do CASUAL like Waje
So, this is where most wearers get it so catastrophically wrong. The most common way to do off the shoulder is to combine a loose top with a trendy pair of palazzos.
But as they say there is many a slip between one part of the outfit and the other. There are too many nuances that wearers tend to ignore at their peril.
Not this popular songstress who has it all together in this black ensemble that flattens her full figure by caressing her curves in all the right places. The magic is that it is able to be chic and comfortable at the same time. Almost classic in perception, this outfit more or less breathes sophistication.
DO: Pay close attention to the fit- it will make or break you. Monochrome works better with this style unless you are rake thin. Scrub and moisturizer the décolletage. All eyes will be on it.
DON’T: Get the length wrong. It might turn out like pyjamas.
